We are unveiling the first of WISE working papers, titled “Will a robot take your job? A sector analysis of computerization and robotization of European labor markets”.
The goal of the paper is to assess the scale of risks associated with technological unemployment on European labor markets. An estimate of the share of automation-prone occupations was derived from a two-stage procedure using the WISE SARA model built specifically for the study. In the first stage we calculated the probability of mechanization, automation or robotization for over 900 occupations listed in the American O*NET database. The results were applied to European data. This showed a strong relationship between the level of economic development of a given country and the share of endangered occupation on the labor market. Poland is at the end of the ranking, which is a signal of potentially high social costs of adjustment if the problem is not remedied early enough.
