A „Brussells Victory” or „Defeat of the Great Armada”? Poland after the climate summit.
Our politicians have the right to be pleased with themselves. The European climate summit in Brussels ended with a total success of the Polish delegation. Thanks to their efforts, industry on the Vistula and the average Kowalski can now feel safe – energy prices will not grow and the energy sector will be modernized. Miners will benefit from it all, as the future of Silesian coal is seen through pink glasses more than ever before. Such is the result of the latest European Council meeting from the perspective of the three main participants: Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz and ministers – Rafał Trzaskowski and Marcin Korolec.
Right-wing politicians, of course, can’t agree with that assessment. For them it is almost as if the nation was betrayed on October 23rd and the government’s acceptation of European climate goals damaged the fundamental interests of the Polish economy that lie in traditional industries. Zbigniew Ziobro’s words clearly indicate that the agreement will cause the Polish economy to fall. Renowned journalists and economic commentators are not helping to clear this mess. In their ignorance of the realities of negotiations in Brussels, the energy markets and the situation of the Polish industry they rival the entire political class. A bystander listening to all this cacophony quickly concludes that the truth lies – as usual – somewhere in the middle. Unfortunately, too hastily.
