The economic, energy and social transformation of coal regions.  What can UK’s experience teach us?  | WEBINAR

The climate crisis calls for a rapid energy transition that entails complex social, economic and political challenges. Through the European Green Deal, the European Union has set a course for economic development based on decarbonisation and reduced resource consumption. One of its key elements is the concept of a Just Transition, i.e. a transition towards a climate-neutral economy in a fair way that leaves no one behind.

Replacing coal with new energy sources is an enormous challenge for Poland, especially for local communities in regions where employment and local culture have been strongly linked to mining for decades or even hundreds of years. Technological solutions are only part of the patchwork of measures that need to emerge. How can Polish coal regions create visions and development paths alternative to the coal economy? How do we build a new future of work, ensure social cohesion, stimulate prosperity and care for the quality of the environment and space? What can the experience of other countries, such as the UK, teach us?

You are cordially invited to participate in a webinar organised by WiseEuropa in collaboration with the British Embassy in Warsaw, with the support of the National Liberty Institute. The event will take place on the 20th of October 2022, at 10:00 a.m., on the ZOOM platform.

During the webinar we will focus on the issue of equitable transformation of coal regions. Drawing on examples from the UK, we will analyse which practices are worth using and which should be avoided during a similar process taking place in Poland.

For the discussion we have invited speakers:

  • Corinna Ziegold, IndustriALL Europe
  • Ross Forbes, Redhills charity
  • Aneta Skubida, WiseEuropa
  • Krzysztof Głowacki, WiseEuropa
